Summary

The Open Space and Trails (OST) Planner position is a member of the Planning Department staff assigned to the Infrastructure team. This planner reports to and works on projects overseen by the Infrastructure Manager and assists in the development of plans and initiatives relating to open space, parkland, and non-motorized trails.

Essential Duties

  • Assist with trail and park planning, including feasibility studies, trail design, land acquisition and trail construction.
  • Organize meeting preparation and follow-up activities, assisting the Infrastructure Manager.
  • Research and write for planning reports and studies.
  • Take a project management role in select projects or project elements as assigned.
  • Work to update countywide open space, parks, and trails data incorporating outreach to municipalities.
  • Work with other staff to help keep trail network status data updated and current.
  • Assist with organizing, convening and preparing minutes for meetings related to ongoing trail projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of open space and trails grant proposals to federal, state, local and private funders.
  • Assist with managing consultant teams that are hired for various trail projects.
  • Work with other Department staff to create engaging visual depictions of open space and trail initiatives and implementation.
  • As part of the Open Space and Trails team, work cooperatively with public partners and develop relationships with partner agencies.
  • Give meeting and public presentations on assigned project work.
  • Assist in reviewing subdivision and land development proposals for trail and open space opportunities.
  • Researching parcels for land ownership information.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field is required.
  • One to two years of relevant experience is preferred, where applicable.
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment on a wide range of projects involving both public and private interests is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, research, organizational, and time management skills are required.
  • Familiarity with the planning process at the local level is essential.
  • Working knowledge of AGOL is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required sit, walk. drive, talk, hear. 
  • Occasionally, the employee will need to stand and climb stairs; reach above shoulder height; and kneel, stoop, crouch or squat. 
  • On rare occasions, the employee will need to lift or carry items.
